One Giant Leap: Understanding the Rapid Evolution of Smartphones for Market Research

It’s no surprise to most in the market research industry that mobile smartphones are swiftly taking over the mobile phone market, with Nielsen’s Mobile Insights group reporting that smartphone owners in the US make up 43% of the total market as of Q3 2011. This number is seemingly in a constant upward climb with no end in sight.  Most estimates predict that smartphones will overtake feature phones sometime in Q2 of 2012.

NPR exploring mobile qualitative research

If I took the call of every vendor that wanted to speak with me, I would not get any work done, but I made time last week to hear about mobile qualitative research.

NPR is interested in understanding how media behavior changes as a new media platform is introduced into a person's life. Of course some changes are long term and nuanced, but others happen nearly immediately. Once these changes become entrenched, we almost forget that we behaved any differently in the past - even those of us who grew up in an era of televisions with only three networks.

The data privacy debate in social media market research: a legal perspective

Greenbookblog.org recently hosted a debate by representatives of research associations and companies engaged in social media research on the subject of data privacy in social media market research. Three major industry bodies were represented: CASRO, MRS and ESOMAR. The debate was spurred on by the recent issuing of new guidelines by ESOMAR, draft guidelines by CASRO and a discussion paper from MRS. The guidelines seek to apply the old, existing market research industry standards and best practices to social media research.
